Notes: Luthier Steven Holst has been making fine handcrafted instruments one at a time for over 20 years. His shop is located in Oregon's verdant Willamette Valley, in the town of Creswell, just south of Eugene. With a production of just eight to ten instruments a year, Holst's guitars are not easy to come by, and are rarely seen on the vintage market. His K-200 Model is his working guitar for the gigging player. This example is in the style of the classic Benedetto, with a 17" X braced full depth Venetian cutaway body and built without a pickguard for maximum acoustic projection.
This example is built with all premium woods including handcarved tap tuned bookmatched spruce top and handsome tiger flame maple body. Guitar is in magnificent condition, without cracks, pick, buckle or thumbwear, and a bit of fogging on the pickup cover is about the only sign of playwear. The 17" body is notably light in weight, just 5lb. 11oz, with a rich, clear and even voice. The neck profile is gently curved across the back, with smooth low action ideal for either finger or pick style playing. The built-in humbucking pickup offers rich, warm amplified tone, with exceptional fidelty to the acoustic voice. Full size archtops are rare with the fast 24 3/4" scale, and this handsome example offers big-box acoustic tone with a nicely nimble neck feel. Base price for the K-200 is over $5000, with a substantial wait. Bag this bargain now, and have it in time for your next gig.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge bronze roundwound strings (.013-.056). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 5/64" to 6/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with the adjustable bridge.
Case: Original hardshell case.
