Notes: Luthier Steven Holst has been making fine handcrafted instruments one at a time for over three decades at his shop in Oregon's verdant Willamette Valley, just south of Eugene. With a production of perhaps eight to ten instruments a year, Holst's guitars are not easy to come by, and are rarely seen on the vintage market. This handsome custom guitar is one of the very few 18" examples he's made to date.
Crafted of tonewoods of exceptional figure and intensity, this full depth super jumbo guitar has a tap tuned soundboard crafted of striking straight grained Adirondack (red) spruce, with art deco 'cat eye' soundholes, echoing the classic Gretsch Synchromatic archtops. With extravagant AAAA tiger flame maple back and sides, the guitar is fitted with a solid mahogany neck, with slotted headstock for lighter weight and better balance..
The full size body is nicely light in weight at just 6lb. 7oz. with a notably rich, clear and open voice. The easy D neck profile is gently curved across the back, with smooth low action over a fresh high precision setup. The Armstrong adjustable floating PAF humbucking pickup offers rich, warm amplified tone, and is adaptable to strings of any composition or gauge. (A mini switch under the guard is attached, but no longer active.)
This example has been kept in splendid shape, without pick, buckle, thumb or fingerboard wear. Complete with original hardware and finish, the instrument remains ensconced in its original deluxe black plush lined hardshell case.
Full size super jumbo instruments are hard to find from contemporary builders. Holst is known for delivering instruments of exceptional craftsmanship, and remarkable affordability. A true best buy in an all carved, pro quality, US luthier built instrument: bag this big beautiful box while you can. One only: call now.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge nickel roundwound strings. The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 4/64" to 5/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with the adjustable bridge.
