Since 1972 the celebrated luthier Steve Grimes has been making master quality instruments by hand, and building in the process a formidable reputation for his meticulous construction and creative designs. Working from his shop on the side of Mt. Haleakala on Maui, Grimes has partnered with such luminaries as George Benson, Larry Coryell, Steve Miller, Leo Kottke, Keola Beamer and Willie Nelson, to create instruments that fuse elegant craftsmanship with strikingly innovative design.
Carved with all Euro tonewoods, this spectacular example of Grimes Montreaux model features an intensely figured AAAA quilted maple body, positively aboil with eye-popping figuration, surely one of the most flat out gobsmacking pieces of tonewood we've ever seen. The instrument is topped as well with a tap-tuned X-braced Alpine spruce soundboard of exceptionally clear grain. Abalone and pearl window inlays adorn the solid ebony fingerboard, with generous 1 3/4" nut and full 25 1/2" scale.
At an astounding 5lb 5oz, the guitar is breathtakingly light in weight, most especially for a full depth 18" super jumbo body. The acoustic voice is clear, vibrant and exceptionally powerful, with thunderous bass resonance, and pronounced natural reverb in the trebles. With all original gold and ebony hardware, the instrument is equipped with an LR Baggs iBeam pickup fitted under the soundboard beneath the bridge, and a 1/4"endpin jack. The gorgeous ice tea sunburst finish shows no playwear or checking, and the instrument has been maintained by its original owner in stunning all original showroom condition.
With its fresh high-precision setup, the guitar has smooth low action over a very comfy gentle D profile neck, and threads effortlessly through the palm. Grimes went all in on this beauty, from the lustrous curly Koa binding, to the engraved truss rod cover. We are pleased to offer this museum quality instrument, complete with its original deluxe black plush lined hardshell case, at this truly exceptional value.
(Oh, and the fish. It's a Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. But you knew that.) One only: call now.
