Notes: Introduced in 1955, the Gibson Les Paul Special was a popular phenomenon, with its twin P-90 pickups, lightweight mahogany body, and eyecatching limed mahogany finish, designed to display crisply on black and white TV. More than half a century later, the Collings Guitar Co. now builds its Model 290, a loving tribute to the Gibson original. Named after the highway that runs past the factory, the Collings 290 updates the traditional design with a beveled back for player comfort, and a stop tailpiece and compensated adjustable bridge for optimized string intonation.

At just 7lb 9oz, the instrument is happily light in weight, with premium touches including twin Lollar P-90 soapbar pickups, and Sperzel tuners with grained ivoroid buttons. This gleaming example has been maintained in gleaming condition: apart from a few incidental lacquer nicks, it shows few signs of play altogether.

The classic '59 style full C profile neck offers smooth low action over gleaming traditional medium nickel-silver fretwire, with a fresh high-precision setup. The tone is clear and clean, with the detail the single coil pickups are renowned for.

Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge nickel roundwound strings (.011-.049). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 4/64" to 5/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with the adjustable bridge.

Case: Original premium Ameritage plush lined hardshell case.
