Materials: Solid bookmatched hand graduated spruce soundboard; hand graduated solid curly maple back, sides and neck; solid ebony fingerboard; pearl headstock logo; 8-ply body binding; solid bone nut.
Hardware: Solid ebony tailpiece, finger rest, compensated adjustable bridge, control knobs, and tuner keys; gold Schaller M-6 mini tuners, full size floating PAF pickup with 1/4" endpin jack. Additional ebony tailpiece included.
Notes: Bill Comins has been making master quality instruments by hand at his Pennsylvania workshop for decades, building in the process a formidable reputation for meticulous detail and precision craftsmanship. Using the design concepts of Bob Benedetto as a starting point, Comins has evolved a line of instruments that reflect both his personal vision and his high standards for fit, finish and tone.
This guitar is a gleaming example of his Concert model, and is constructed of bookmatched curly maple, tap-tuned quartersawn spruce, and hand crafted ebony hardware. The peghead echoes the design of the classic prewar Epiphone Masterbilt, and the tap-tuned soundboard is X-braced, in the style of the beloved Advanced Model Gibson archtops of the 30's.
At just 5lb 14oz, the 17" body is notably lightweight and well balanced, and the warmly ambered blonde finish imparts a rich glow to the finely carved tonewood. The neck profile is a gently flattened D, with smooth low action over a fresh high-precision setup on the solid ebony fingerboard. The voice is clear and detailed, and highly responsive to the pick or fingers, all conveyed to the amp faithfully by the floating full size PAF humbucking pickup.
Carefully maintained, the instrument has all original finish, without pick, buckle, thumb or fingerboard wear. A short section of centerseam under the tailpiece has been soundly resealed and cleated, and the guitar is free of finish nicks or checking. The guitar is supplied with an additional ebony tailpiece as well, in addition to the original one, which is included as well.
Bill's own personally crafted artisan guitars are rarely offered for resale, and can run well into $20K or more at this writing, with a considerable wait time. Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge nickel roundwound strings. The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 4/64" to 5/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with the adjustable bridge.
